Academic English for Undergraduate Admission
上記 Intensive Day Program 修了後は引き続きアルバータ大学を目指して English for Academic Purposes を受講し、EAP 140、145 プログラムを修了するとアルバータ大学の英語要件を満たし、英語テストが免除されます。
レベルは EAP 135、140、145 の 3 レベルとなります。
ESL 105
Practice the survival English necessary for shopping, eating out or visiting a doctor. Learn how to begin and end a conversation, ask and answer questions, and talk about likes and dislikes. Acquire basic vocabulary and grammar for talking about family, the weather and leisure activities. Listen to announcements and instructions and read simple texts. Learn to write about familiar everyday topics.
ESL 110
Learn common telephone phrases/conventions and how to give and follow directions. Improve your speaking skills by explaining how to do something. Express emotions such as surprise, and give and respond to invitations. Read and write traditional stories, relating them to your own experiences and culture. Learn about various aspects of Canadian culture such as punctuality and gift-giving. Write letters and emails using appropriate formatting and language.
ESL 115
Listen to short talks to recognize main ideas and supporting points. Give a presentation about a place or event in Edmonton. Give and ask for opinions, and express agreement or disagreement in a small group discussion. Learn how to structure and write a paragraph. Use graphic organizers to aid understanding of reading and listening, and read short stories to identify elements of setting and plot.
ESL 120
Recognize cause/effect and compare/contrast relationships in short lectures and readings. Participate in discussions to solve problems, and give a formal organized presentation. Write paragraphs using different rhetorical patterns, and learn how to write summaries in your own words. Analyze a variety of readings to distinguish facts and opinions and make inferences.
ESL 125
Listen to lectures and learn how to take good notes. Give a presentation based on personal research, including interviews with English speakers. Learn how to organize and write an academic essay. Build words using stems, prefixes and suffixes, and recognize and use language chunks. Analyze short stories and authentic texts.
ESL 130
Participate in informal debates and discussions, and learn how to present and defend a point of view. Present a critique of a work. Recognize irony, humour and satire in readings as well as the use of metaphors and similes. Listen to academic lectures and information broadcasts and summarize information taken from notes. Work on refining essay writing skills using a variety of rhetorical patterns.
ESL 135
Listen to broadcasts, lectures, discussions and debates to identify and evaluate a speaker’s arguments. Read texts to identify persuasive techniques used by writers. Study a novel and respond both orally and in writing to literature. Access information from a variety of sources to use as support in presentations, debates and essays.
EAP 135
EAP 135 focuses on the development of language fluency and accuracy and on building the necessary vocabulary for further studies. Listening, reading, speaking, and writhing skills are emphasized by engaging students in a variety of academic activities. This course, which precedes EAP 140, will enable students to lay the foundations for successful academic writing. Students will be introduced to language lerning strategies and will develop study skills that are crucial to their success in an English-Language university.
EAP 140
EAP 140 focuses on beginning to develop the language skills necessary to interact within a university setting. This is done by building listening, reading, writing and speaking vocabulary and comprehension, while emphasizing language accuracy as the primary focus for all second-language learners. Students will be introduced to some basic reading and writing strategies, and will start to put into practice the study skills which will help them to succeed in a North American setting.
EAP 145
EAP 145 continues to build and polish the language skills necessary to succeed in a Canadian university. In this course, the research and library skills introduced in EAP 140 will be further developed, emphasizing academic methods of integrating source materials into an argument. Skills for critical thinking and argument building will also be emphasized throughout. At the completion of EAP 145, students will have acquired the language skills and understanding of the North American academic system necessary for them to continue their studies with confidence.
